Only fraction of girls and boys are given separately. Not the total no of students or even what is the fraction of the total students that is boys or girls is not given. So can not be calculated.

let, the number of girls and boys are 5x and 8x respectively,
then total student is = 8x + 5x = 13x
girls participated = 5x * (1/5) = x
boys participated = 8x * (1/8) = x
so total participated student = x + x = 2x
so, the fraction of total students who participated in the fair is = 2x / 13x = 2/13.
